I buy stamps in bulk and they last me years. That way I'm only paying the price of first class from years ago.

they don't let you get away with that here. You have to buy smaller denmination stamps to make up the current postal rates

Here, if you biy a 1st class stamp, you can still use it years later and it will be ok.
