Look in to stops for Route 66 along the course, almost sounds like its what you're doing.....some are dumps but many are really cool!

FYI Pop's in Oklahoma shuts off the lights around 11 if I recall correctly, but looks sweet if they are on and you're there after dark.

Most of the sites I was to unfortunately are West of NM, but look up Cadillac Ranch and Times Beach to see if you'd enjoy them, The Gemini Giants were pretty cool also!
